Vic: Police may ban mobile patrols as pay dispute drags on
Victorian police will consider banning all mobile patrols unless the state government
moves to resolve their ongoing pay dispute.
Police Association Victorian secretary PAUL MULLETT says the state government's stalling
is forcing police to step up their industrial campaign.
He says if talks break down at a meeting on Tuesday with police chief commissioner
CHRISTINE NIXON, he'll call a special executive meeting to consider stepping up work bans.
The next phase of industrial action would include bans on mobile patrols.
Senior Sergeant MULLETT says police don't want to endanger the community.
He says if the wage outcome isn't a good one, the BRACKS government will have to shoulder
the responsibility of exposing community safety.
Police Minister ANDRE HAERMEYER says if police take measures that compromise public
safety, the government will ask the Australian Industrial Relations Commission to remove
the Police Association's right to take protected industrial action.
Union officials have demanded a wage increase of between 13 and 39 per cent to bring
Victorian police on par with officers in the New South Wales force.
