FED: Lees says Democrats won t support further Telstra sale

The Australian Democrats say they won't support the sale of the remaining government share
of Telstra.

Leader MEG LEES says Telstra remains a valuable asset and the government doesn't need to
float the remaining half to balance the books.

Senator LEES is responding to comments from Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD, who's said on
Melbourne radio that all federal government debt could be paid off by 2002.

He said this would leave the door open for tax cuts.

Senator LEES says it doesn't make economic or social sense to sell a valuable asset.
