Qld: Road safety plan released
BRISBANE, April 30 AAP - Police will spend an extra 31,000 hours on Queensland roadsnext financial year under a road safety plan released today.
Premier Peter Beattie told state parliament the plan would also involve extending thetime in which speed cameras could operate from five to eight hours a day, taking totalhours to 70,000 a year.
Mr Beattie said he made no apologies for the move, which would save lives.
"Twelve people died on our roads at Easter - 12 too many," Mr Beattie said.
Mr Beattie said the changes were based on research conducted over the past two yearswhich showed a rise in the number of speed camera hours and greater on-road enforcementcut accidents by nine per cent over holiday periods.
Police Minister Tony McGrady said he was considering allowing civilians to operatespeed cameras in order to free up police officers to conduct more road patrols.
Research tabled in parliament today showed Queensland's per capita road toll of 6.22was the lowest in the nation after the ACT.
The figure had halved over the past decade, despite a 600,000 increase in the numberof drivers over the period.
